The 1.8L and 2.0L engines return decent fuel efficiency numbers at 30-31 and 27-28 combined mpg, respectively. However, competitors in the segment are rated better. Regardless of engine choice, it takes close to 10 seconds to motivate the 2016 Hyundai Elantra from 0 to 60 mph.
In general, if the engine is well maintained and decent gasoline and lubricants are used, there won’t be any major issues. The engine has a lifespan of about 125–150k miles (200,000-250,000 km). BrandNewMe. Its reliability as the first CVVD engine in the world is unknown given that it is a Smartstream engine that was released in 2019. The 3.2L has a relatively good reputation for reliability and overall performance. The 2.0T has a performance edge over the 3.2. Some respected automotive analysts in Quebec did a nice review of the 2019 Cherokee with the 2.0T, saying this engine brings a better overall driving experience and is a better match to the 9-speed than the 3.2.
But the engine size just appeals to the "monkey brain" part of us, thinking simplistic thoughts like "bigger/more is better." I have a 4.2L engine that makes 275 HP, but there are engines these days with better technology that are able to make the same 275HP while also being much smaller.
There are a couple of extremely reliable Mercedes engines such as the 2.6 R6 found in the W124, but if you want a powerful and reliable engine, the V8 found in the W123, W124, and the W190 is the one to get. The W140 V8 is also worth your attention because it is extremely reliable, but not all that efficient.

Diesel engines EA189 2.0 TDI The 2.0-liter engines did not differ much from the 1.6-liter ones, except for the displacement, of course. It used its own more efficient turbocharger, most often the BorgWarner BV43, as well as some especially powerful diesel modifications equipped with a block of balancer shafts.

More electronic-rich modern engines also require less frequent tune-ups when compared to older engines. Other key engine components, like carburetors, have also been given an electronic-makeover. ralph7up. 2038 posts · Joined 2016. #3 · Jul 25, 2019. IMHO is is the "open block" engine design of the 1.6, 1.5 as opposed to the closed block engine designe of the 2.0. Like Centex said there also could be many other factors and complications. 2016 Escape Titanium w/Sync 3v3.0, 2.0 L. Equipment Group 301A, Navigation. For example, a car that has a 1390cc engine would be described as a 1.4 litre. Petrol engines are divided into four groups: under 1.0-litre, 1.0 to 2.0-litres, 2.0 to 3.0-litres and 3.0-plus. Engines of 1.0-litre or less usually feature three or four cylinders, with many using turbochargers for an extra boost. Most cars and SUV enginess have four, six, or eight cylinders. Generally, an engine with more cylinders produces more power, while an engine with fewer cylinders gets better fuel economy. Cylinders will either be arranged in a straight line (an inline engine, i.e. “inline 4”, “I4” or “L4” ) or in two rows (a V engine, i.e. “V8”). There are five engines to choose from – two petrols and three diesels – and the most economical option is the 1.7 CRDi with 116PS which returns a claimed 61.4mpg. If your annual mileage doesn’t warrant diesel power, then there’s an entry-level 1.6-litre petrol which is also front-wheel drive. 1. Lower fuel economy. Due to their larger size and more complex design, 4-cylinder engines typically have lower fuel economy compared to 3-cylinder engines. 2. Higher emissions. A 4-cylinder engine generally produces more emissions compared to a 3-cylinder engine, due to its larger size and higher power output. 3.

As cloudnyn3 says, it's all about improvements in engine design - a modern 1.4 can produce just as much power as a 2.0 from 20 years ago, but with much better fuel consumption and emissions - plus it's smaller and lighter, which helps again - you get more space in the car for other things, and the better fuel economy means you can fit a smaller fuel tank without losing range, again gaining space. jRGUq.
